Master of Science

Computational Biology

Key Facts

The Master of Science in Computational Biology is being offered since winter term 2023/2024 at the University of Cologne. It provides students with a solid background in computational and quantitative methods to analyze, integrate and interpret biological data, covering a spectrum from single cells to entire ecosystems. It is aimed at students with a Bachelor's degree in biological subjects but with a strong inclination towards quantitative thinking

  • Degree: Master of Science
  • Duration: 4 semesters, full-time
  • Language: English
  • Start: Winter term (October each year)
  • Number of places: 18

This programme offers you:

  • training in basic concepts and algorithms in sequence-based bioinformatics, as well as mathematical modelling of evolutionary, developmental or metabolic processes
  • training in classical statistical methods and state-of-the art concepts in machine learning
  • insight in the quantitative foundations of biological systems
  • a choice of different biological application fields, from genetics and molecular biology, to neuro and plant sciences, ecosystems and biodiversity research
  • a high degree of practical experience through (dry) lab and computer work and in collaborative projects with wet lab biologists ensuring proficiency in applying the gained theoretical knowledge

Students with an undergraduate degree in quantitative subjects (as e.g., mathematics, physics or computer science) who wish to complement their profile with biological applications, may find the study programm "M.Sc. Computational Sciences" more suitable.

Graduate competencies

Graduates will be able to identify open questions in the areas of computational and quantitative biology, conduct own or collaborative research projects, and communicate their findings in written reports or oral presentations. The master degree in computational biology will offer a wide range of career opportunities within or outside of academia.  These range from continued education in doctoral programs to professional careers in the life science industry, non-governmental organizations, science management or communication and scientific outreach.
