Central workshop

The Central Workshop of the Department of Biology is a specialized service facility that supports research and teaching with technical expertise. It serves as a central point of contact for the development, maintenance, and repair of complex scientific equipment.

The workshop's range of services is essentially divided into three core areas:

  • Precision Mechanics: This area focuses on the design and manufacture of individual components and custom-made parts from metal and plastics. High-precision prototypes for experimental setups are created here that are not available on the commercial market.
  • Electronics: The electronics department is responsible for the planning, construction, and repair of electronic components. This includes troubleshooting laboratory equipment as well as developing specific control and measurement electronics for biological experiments.
  • IT service: The IT specialists of the central workshop support users in the procurement, commissioning and configuration of computer and server systems and ensure the integration of technical systems into the university network.

The close collaboration between these trades enables the central workshop to efficiently implement innovative research projects directly on campus.

You can find us on the first basement level of the Biocenter Cologne at Zülpicher Str. 47b in rooms -1.204 to -1.309.

For larger projects, please clarify financing with Mr. Leson first. Smaller projects can also be submitted directly to the contact persons of the individual trades.

The costs incurred are recorded, collected, and billed annually at the beginning of April.
